From Scan to Seat: Building a Reliable Digital Dental Workflow

A digital workflow only delivers its promise when every handoff, from intraoral scan to final delivery, is defined, validated and repeatable.

From Scan to Seat: Building a Reliable Digital Dental Workflow

Digital dentistry has moved well beyond early adoption. Intraoral scanners, CAD software and in-lab or outsourced manufacturing are now part of everyday work for many laboratories and practices. Yet the results still vary widely from one case to the next. The difference is rarely the technology itself; it is the workflow that connects it.

1. Start with a clean, complete scan

Every downstream step depends on the quality of the initial data. Margins should be clearly visible, the bite registration should be captured in maximum intercuspation, and opposing and antagonist arches must be complete. A short internal checklist at the scanning stage prevents most remakes later in the process.

2. Validate before you design

Before any design work begins, the case should be checked: Is the margin readable? Is there enough reduction for the chosen material? Are the shade and prescription details complete? Catching gaps at this point costs minutes. Catching them after milling costs days.

3. Design against a clear prescription

CAD design is most efficient when the prescription is specific: material, contact strength, occlusal clearance, emergence profile and any aesthetic notes. A consistent prescription format allows designers to work quickly and gives the clinician predictable results.

4. Approve, then produce

A simple design approval step, even a screenshot review, keeps everyone aligned before material is committed. Once approved, production can follow a defined path for milling, printing, sintering, finishing and quality control.

5. Close the loop with feedback

Seat notes, adjustments and remakes are valuable data. Recording them by case type helps the team refine design libraries, prescription templates and scanning protocols over time.

The takeaway

A reliable digital workflow is a sequence of small, well-defined steps: submit, validate, design, approve, produce, check and deliver. When each step has an owner and a standard, the technology finally performs the way it was meant to.
